PC repair scam warning

Cold calling scam artists targeting NZ

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know of a dodgy PC repair scam that is doing the rounds in New Zealand and has been reported in the USA, and Australia.

I had a customer call me today asking for advice, it seems her elderly mother had received a phone call from a company calling itself 'Live PC Solutions' The caller possessed a thick Indian accent and claimed her computer was infected with a dangerous virus and that Microsoft had detected this threat and passed the information on to them since they were a Microsoft partner.

They then proceeded to tell her she MUST do something about it now and if she didn't there would be dire consequences. Talk about a scary hard sell!

From here they asked her to enable Remote Desktop via the command line and proceeded to install a fake mal-ware application which flashed all sorts of scary warnings and did very little. At this stage the sell was successful and unfortunately my customers mother agreed to a 2 year subscription costing over $390 NZD for service that is likely to do very little and could create a high security risk since the scammers had tricked her into enabling Remote Desktop.

It is important to note that there is nothing wrong with legit remote access services, we offer one ourselves, however 'Live PC Solutions' in our opinion are nothing more than scam artists.

Our advice should you receive a call from this or any other company claiming your PC is infected with a virus or has some other fault is to simply hang up. Legitimate computer repair companies do not do business this way and you should always treat this kind of cold call with suspicion.
